Joey O'Brien Joins Ireland Under-17 Coaching Staff

Experience for Cotter’s group

Robinson believes O’Brien can offer more than technical advice, with his playing career and management background adding authority around a young squad.

“We want people like Joey in our system to influence the players,” Robinson said.

The report says O’Brien is working under a paid casual agreement, alongside assistant coach Mark Connors. For Cotter, the camp should provide an opportunity to blend fresh ideas with the demands of tournament preparation.

A demanding World Cup group

Ireland are set to face Brazil, Costa Rica and Tanzania in Group I at the tournament in Doha. That presents a varied challenge, with the Malaga fixtures offering a useful rehearsal against strong international opposition before the competition begins.

The quality of the opposition will also test Ireland’s squad depth. Ryan Sheridan of St Patrick’s Athletic and Josh O’Dwyer, who has reportedly moved from Shamrock Rovers to FC Liefering, are among the players attracting attention.

Senior progress and selection pressure

The report also highlights Cillian Murphy of Cork City and Richard Ferizaj of Bray Wanderers, both of whom have already gained senior experience. Victor Ozhianvuna, who has reportedly impressed for Shamrock Rovers, remains an injury concern and could miss another Under-17 World Cup. His reported move to Arsenal adds further interest to his recovery.

Rory Finneran and Jaden Umeh have also reportedly been involved with the senior team, but Cotter insists the younger group retains considerable depth.

“Rory and Jaden are ready now, others will develop later,” Cotter explained.

The Malaga camp is the next chance to judge that depth, with Ireland’s performances there likely to shape the final tournament picture.
