Tottenham Prepare €70m Offer for Liverpool's Cody Gakpo

Tottenham make the first move

The proposed fee would represent a significant commitment from Tottenham and a clear attempt to move ahead of their rivals before negotiations formally begin. The report says Liverpool could receive an approach after the World Cup, rather than immediately.

Gakpo’s versatility is central to his appeal. He can operate from the left, play centrally or support a striker, giving Tottenham an option who can fit several attacking systems. His experience at Liverpool also makes him a more developed signing than a purely prospective talent.

Liverpool face a difficult decision

Gakpo remains under contract at Anfield until 2030, so Liverpool are not under immediate contractual pressure to sell. The report nevertheless says the player has doubts about his role under manager Andoni Iraola, adding uncertainty to a situation that would otherwise favour the club.

The forward has also reportedly been discussed as a possible bargaining piece in Liverpool’s interest in Yan Diomande of RB Leipzig. That possibility underlines how active Liverpool’s squad planning could become, with Federico Chiesa and Curtis Jones also said to have uncertain futures.

For Tottenham, a deal could offer an added connection with Andrew Robertson, who reportedly joined the club from Liverpool in June. That existing relationship may help, but it will not remove the financial and sporting questions surrounding the move.

Newcastle and Bayern remain threats

The report says Newcastle are following Gakpo’s situation, while Bayern have renewed their interest after previously considering the Dutchman. Bayern are also linked with Marcus Rashford and Gabriel Martinelli, which could make their pursuit dependent on other moves.

The next major signal will be Tottenham’s formal approach after the tournament. Until then, Gakpo’s decision and Liverpool’s view of the €70 million proposal will determine whether this develops into a transfer race or fades into summer speculation.
