Canada Men's Team Equipment Supervisor Spencer Ure's Role

Club staff are the safest option

At a recent camp in Charlotte, Ure reportedly brought in staff from Charlotte FC to handle the washing. During a World Cup warm-up against Uzbekistan in Edmonton, he turned to the Edmonton Elks’ equipment manager.

The choices reflect a practical hierarchy:

  • Club equipment staff handle football kit every day.
  • Hotel laundry systems are designed for bedding and towels, not match shirts.

The update says hotel machines can rely on hotter cycles and stronger chemicals, creating a risk to fabric, sizing and colour. One load reportedly left a shirt reduced from a men’s medium to something closer to a child’s size.

That is more than a laundry mishap. A clean shirt that no longer fits is an operational failure, especially when replacement equipment may be hours away.

When travel becomes the job

The challenge reportedly grows in Europe, where clubs may be less willing to provide outside assistance. In those situations, Ure can be left searching for a laundromat with machines large enough for a full team’s equipment.

The work may continue late into the night and in unfamiliar areas, but the standard remains unchanged: the kit must be ready for training and competition. Washing temperatures, drying settings and access to commercial machines become part of the team’s preparation.

Ure’s position is described as both equipment supervisor and administrative assistant, placing him close to the logistical pressure points of international football. Travel schedules, changing venues and limited support turn routine tasks into recurring problems to solve.

The hidden work behind international football

Players see the finished product: clean training gear, organised match kit and equipment waiting at the correct venue. Behind it sits a network of staff, club relationships and contingency plans.

For Canada, the next camp will provide another test of that system. The storyline to watch is whether local football partners can keep supporting the team-or whether Ure will once again be working after midnight to make sure the shirts are ready.
